The estuary of the rivers Meuse and Rhine forms a unique wetland in the West of the Netherlands, called the Biesbosch. It is a fresh water tidal area with willow woods, reedbeds and flowery grassland polders of about 100 km2.
Recent nature development brought new wetland areas which are a paradise for birds. A big part of the world population of Bewick's swans visit the Biesbosch in winter, as well as huge amounts of geese and ducks. Migration time is good for ospreys, spoonbills, godwits and other waders. Since 2012white-tailed eagle breeds in the Biesbosch, so you can see this hugeraptor year round.
The Biesbosch was man made in hundreds of years, after a huge flood in 1421. People used to cut and harvest bull rushes, reed, and willows. Relicts of this culture can be seen throughout the Biesbosch, but especially in the spectacular Biesbosch MuseumEiland.
There are two other visitor centres you can start your visit from: Biesboschcentrum Dordrecht in the North and Biesboschcentrum Drimmelen in the South. Be aware that you have to join an excursion or hire a boat or canoe from these places. Biesbosch MuseumEiland has more walking , birding and cycling possibilities.
