Loch Garten Nature Reserve - Loch Garten Osprey Centre

Nestling in the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains and close to the famous River Spey the Loch Garten Osprey Centre is the spiritual home of Ospreys in the UK. In 1954 the reserve was the site of the first breeding attempt by migrating Ospreys after they disappeared from Britain in the 1900’s. Since then the centre has been developed to contain viewing facilities, live nest cameras and a shop.

Loch Garten is part of the wider RSPB Abernethy National Nature Reserve which covers approximately 14,000 hectares. This very important site is home to over 5000 recorded species of plants and animals and covers a wide variety of habitats including; Caledonian pine forest, upland heaths and arctic montane plateau. It is home to species such as Capercaillie, Scottish Crossbill, Golden Eagle and Ptarmigan.

The wider Strathspey area is world famous for its whisky production. You can visit working distilleries and taste the wonderful products. Mountain biking, salmon fishing, dolphin watching and the world famous Loch Ness are all within an hour’s drive from Loch Garten.
